STRATEGIC ADVISOR, TEACHER AND AUTHORMonika Janfelt

“I’ve always been interested in how we build up our professional identities, how we use the abilities we have and how we form our work lives in relation to the time, labour market and the society in which we live.”
I was born and raised in Finland and lived in Stockholm before moving to Denmark. My own career started in the field of research in the university and archive sector where I spent many years researching. I have taught, counselled students, worked in research groups and was a doctoral supervisor; written books and articles and been part of different boards and committees and much more. My many years of work in Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Norway have given me a deep understanding of the research and academic sector.

Curiosity and a need to experience other parts of the labour market led to a career shift. My next step was into the world of HR, where I focused on talent and career development and on starting my own business. Over the years, I’ve talked with many researchers, managers, leaders and other professionals about their careers and professional identities. I’ve taught courses for PhD supervisors about their roles as supervisors, and courses for PhD students on how to handle their role as a researcher.
I’ve held many career strategy courses for postdocs, associate professors and lecturers and I’ve worked with management trainees on whether or not management and leadership is a career path they themselves actually want to follow. I’ve also talked to experienced managers and leaders about how they can advance their careers in leadership and management.

I’ve written prolifically over the years: books, articles and reports, as well as contributions for anthologies and encyclopaedias Karriere – kunsten at flytte sig (2017) and its English translation Career – The Art of Moving On (2018) are my latest publications.

I am director of professional development at Moveo Nordic™ and our publishing company Moveo Publishing™, holding courses, coaching sessions and solving strategic tasks.

At the end of the day, it’s not about what she did. It’s about what she managed to start.

You have been instrumental in helping me identify and unfold my strengths, and, in particular, you have helped me see where my individual goals interplay with the greater goals of the institute and the university. That made me develop from being a typical nerdy researcher to being a team player, which, in turn, made my working life a lot more fun.

From as early as our initial meeting, you gave me clear and concrete tools for dealing with the challenges of making work a free space. The incredible thing is that that meant the crisis period actually became the most productive year of my entire associate professor career.

I was stuck in routine and had lost the joy I felt for my job… Monika Janfelt’s career coaching, which included a career test, got me on track for where I wanted to head …. Finally, I dared to take the leap and embark on a journey into the exciting unknown. My wish to further develop has been met with support by management, and I’ve been appointed to a new position, where I’m sure my skills and interests are being far better utilised and where I feel challenged and in “my niche”. I’ve regained joy for my job and have the energy and the desire to make a difference – with the added bonus that my family and I are experiencing me as a happier person. Thanks for the push, Monika!
